The South Coast Writers Centre presents a weekend intensive workshop on the craft of memoir writing, as part of the Shellharbour Enliven Program, exclusively for SCWC Members (tickets include membership fee for new members).
"Memory is a path into the unconscious. For the writer it can be an opportunity to reflect on life through topic, time and place, to make sense of the past and its impact on the present."
Across this weekend intensive, under the tutelage of Penny Bell participants will complete writing exercises, analysis of effective published memoir extracts, and reflection on their own writing, sharing with other participants if they are comfortable doing so. Topics covered will include the reasons for writing memoir, finding your voice, and how to bring writing to life using vivid detail, narrative structure, and focused editing.
This workshop is based on Patti Miller’s book Writing True Stories: The complete guide to writing autobiography, memoir, personal essay, biography, travel and creative nonfiction. Participants will need to purchase their own copy, or borrow one from their local library. Buy a copy from your local bookstore or from Booktopia here.
Penny Bell has a Masters in Applied Linguistics and a Masters in Adult Education combined with many years of teaching, and as a result, has a strong grounding in academic writing and group facilitation. Her interest in creative writing comes from a lifelong love of reading and more recent training in creative non-fiction including travel writing, feature writing, memoir writing and end of life biography writing.
Penny facilitates her workshops by offering triggers that help access creativity when writing a first draft. For later drafts, she uses her linguistic experience to analyze the features of what you consider successful writing and opportunities to reflect on your own writing. Workshops are task-based and interactive, providing an opportunity to learn from experience and each other.
