Last week, the announcement that The Australian-Vogel’s Literary Award would not be awarded in 2019 created a storm through the nation’s writing community.

The Vogel is one of Australia’s most prestigious prizes for young writers, offering a $20,000 cash prize and a book deal with Allen & Unwin to a writer under 35. It has launched the careers of Tim Winton, Kate Grenville and Andrew McGahan. But this year, for the third time in the prize’s 39 years, no winner was announced by judges Stephen Romei, Tegan Bennett Daylight and Megan O’Brien.
