Laura Jean McKay wins $100,000 Victorian Prize for Literature

The Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards have been announced online, with Laura Jean McKay’s prescient story about a novel virus taking out this year’s Fiction category as well as the overall Victorian Prize for Literature.

The winners of the 2021 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards (VPLAs) were revealed last night (1 February) with the ceremony held virtually for the first time.

Author Laura Jean McKay received the prestigious Victorian Prize for Literature, valued at $100,000, for her prophetic and novel The Animals in this Country (2019, Scribe). She also won the Fiction category, taking home another $25,000.
