When the queer bookstore Hares & Hyenas first opened in Melbourne in the early 1990s, there were less than a dozen queer picture books for kids, most coming from the same publisher, according to the bookstore’s Collections Developer Rowland Thompson.
Now the store has over 250 titles for kids which includes family diversity, same-sex parenting, trans and gender diverse parents, adoption, surrogacy and families formed through the use of assisted reproductive treatments (ART).
