After seven years, Dr Brendan Nelson announced this week (15 August) that he will step down as Director of the Australian War Memorial (AWM) at the end of the year. His contract ends on 31 December.
Dr Nelson’s tenure has been one of significant change for the AWM. Foremost amongst his initiatives has been the introduction of the daily Last Post Ceremony, leading the Memorial through the centenary of the First World War celebrations; completion of the renovated First World War Galleries, and controversial plans for the AWM’s redevelopment to the tune of $498 million.
