Sydney Writers’ Festival takes over Riverside Theatres, Parramatta, once again for a full day of Young Adult (YA) programming. We’ll be joined by international guests, including bestselling author and screenwriter Jesse Andrews (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) and Patrick Ness (Chaos Walking and A Monster Calls), two-time winner of the Carnegie Medal.
This year, ten Sydney Writers’ Festival Youth Curators have contributed to a program that interrogates diversity, stereotypes and politics in YA fiction.
Australian favourites include: Oscar-winning animator Shaun Tan, award-winning UK artist and cartoonist Chris Riddell and A Song of Ice & Fire and Harry Potter illustrator Levi Pinfold who will discuss how artists create the imaginary worlds seen in YA and fantasy books. Authors Kristy Eagar, Bec Kavanagh and Randa Abdel-Fattah reveal how a lack of a political voice leads to disempowerment, disengagement and disadvantage. Truthful writing about the experiences of teenage girls will be discussed with celebrated YA writers Alicia Tuckerman, Tara Eglington, Jenna Guillaume and Rebecca Lim.
TeenCon returns this year offering the inside scoop on the most exciting YA releases direct from publishers, along with book giveaways, impromptu competitions and audience participation, hosted by award-winning Australian author Will Kostakis. And see Who Takes the Crown in the #poetrydebate with Evelyn Araluen and Omar Musa – three rounds, one winner!
