Selected titles from this year’s long list

The longlist for the Man Booker Prize has today been announced. Considered the leading prize for literary fiction written in English, winning the prize equals international recognition and a cool £50,000 for the author in top place.

Last year, Australian author Richard Flanagan’s win saw The Narrow Road to the Deep North sell almost 800,000 worldwide. Yet this year no local authors have made the longlist.

Originally open only to authors from the UK and Commonwealth, Republic of Ireland and Zimbabwe, the rules of the prize changed at the end of 2013 to embrace the English language ‘in all its vigour, its vitality, its versatility and its glory.’
