‘So, do you want to write about fashion, or be a blogger, or something?’

It’s an all-too familiar question put to women when they reveal they want to be a writer. In a recent article on Kill Your Darlings, Trivial Pursuits: The media and ‘women’s interests’, writer Kate Iselin recalls a time she told a male journalist she had an interest in writing, only to be met with a condescending grin and the not-so-promising thought that her career would culminate in the role of the ‘Editor’s assistant’ – not even that of Assistant Editor.
